Un article-récit qui illustre le fait que la traduction littéraire encourage un acte de performativité, dans la durée et la répétition, par l’entremise d’un processus traductif collaboratif, pour le cas présent du récit de vie d’une femme autochtone, They Called Me Number One de Bev Sellars. Cette identification à l’Autre agit à titre de savoir-être voire d’approche traductologique pour la traduction du récit de vie, et d’exercice d’émancipation et de guérison chez les différentes personnes investies dans la production du texte d’arrivée vers le français Matricule « Numéro 1 » : secrets et survie dans un pensionnat autochtone. Leur intimité se voit en partie « déconstruite », et ce, d’un point de vue discursif, linguistique et traductologique. Ce travail de collaboration Autochtone / Allochtone contribue à la conversation nationale entre les diverses communautés autochtones, dont les enfants de plusieurs générations ont fréquenté un pensionnat et y ont subi de la maltraitance.
