Abstract
Dans les annes 1820, l'essor remarquable du commerce et de l'immigration transatlantiques donna lieu de nombreux naufrages en Amrique du Nord britannique, o l'absence de phares ctiers dans les rgions isoles posait un problme particulier. Des ngociations dbutrent en 1826 entre les colonies maritimes, auxquelles s'ajouta le Bas-Canada, et le gouvernement imprial sur les moyens d'clairer les ctes isoles, et le ministre des Colonies accepta en 1835 de financer la construction de phares sur les les St. Paul et Scatarie, l'entre du golfe du Saint-Laurent, si les colonies finanaient leur entretien. Les trois phares et deux stations de sauvetage qui en rsultrent redfinirent la scurit de la navigation comme tant une responsabilit partage entre les tats impriaux et coloniaux dans le monde entier.
