Abstract
La rentrée 2022 des Cahiers Charlevoix débute, comme il est de mise, par un hommage saluant la mémoire de notre confrère émérite Fernand Ouellet (1926-2021), premier titulaire du cinquième fauteuil de la Société Charlevoix, disparu récemment. Adhérant dès 1993 à l’idée de notre regroupement, celui qui en fut l’aîné allait généreusement et activement contribuer aux six premiers tomes de nos cahiers (1995-2004) de même qu’au hors-série Les Régionalismes de l’Ontario français (Gref, 2005) ; ses études substantielles, développées sur plus de 500 pages, forment le socle d’un ouvrage capital : L’Ontario français dans le Canada français avant 1911. Contribution à l’histoire sociale (Prise de parole, 2005). La notice nécrologique, préparée par Yves Frenette, retrace la carrière de ce chercheur exceptionnel, considéré comme l’un des plus grands historiens canadiens, depuis ses débuts aux Archives de la Province de Québec et à l’Université Laval jusqu’à l’Université York à Toronto, en passant par l’Université Carleton et l’Université d’Ottawa. Tout à la fois prolifique et controversé, Fernand Ouellet fit paraître son premier article en 1950 et ses derniers en 2012. Avant ses écrits sur l’Ontario français, il avait donné à la science historique deux grands livres : Histoire économique et sociale du Québec, 1760-1850 (Fides, 1966) et Le Bas-Canada, 1791-1840. Changements structuraux et crise (Puo, 1976).
