Beet pseudoyellows virus has a wide range of host plants including both cultivated species (mainly in the cucurbit family), weeds, and ornamentals. The virus is transmitted in a non-persistent manner by the greenhouse whitefly (<em>Trialeurodes vaporarium</em>). Since the virus is not transmitted mechanically or by seed, its prevalence is closely correlated with the extent of its vector. The presence of BPYV has been confirmed in many regions around the world: North America (USA, Canada, Costa Rica), Asia (Japan), Oceania (Australia, New Zealand), and in Europe (Crete, Cyprus, Italy, Spain, Bulgaria, France, the Netherlands). Due to the widespread occurrence of greenhouse whitefly in closed as well as open crops throughout Poland, and the widespread occurrence of virus host plants, the penetration of BPYV into our country with infected insects or with infected plant material (vegetable and ornamental seedlings, fruits), could cause a potential threat to vegetables grown in Poland (e.g., cucumbers, zucchini, pumpkin, lettuce, spinach, carrots) as well as beets, tobacco or flax.
