This entry describes can‐do statements for language learning, detailing some of the can‐do publications available, the contexts and types of language use the statements describe, and the audiences and purposes that have been defined for published can‐do descriptors. Research findings concerning different uses of can‐do statements, including proficiency assessment, placement testing, classroom assessment, and self‐assessment are presented. The entry concludes with recommendations for pedagogical applications for can‐do statements. These include considerations for selecting existing can‐do statements, writing curriculum‐aligned can‐do statements, and applications for English learners' use of can‐do statements in the classroom, such as self‐assessing language proficiency, monitoring gains, framing language portfolios, and communicating what learners can do in the target language to other stakeholders.
