Abstract
The paper, based on newly published sources, analyzes the initial stage of the formation of Moscow art school, namely, the Life, and then the Art class and Moscow School of Painting and Sculpture. This process unfolded during the reign of Emperor Nicholas I and with his undoubted support. In the light of new information, the relationship between the Imperial Academy of Arts and the Moscow educational institution appears completely different than it was traditionally presented based on the critical speeches of V.V. Stasov. It is obvious that without the comprehensive and gratuitous support of the Imperial Academy of Arts, Moscow school could not have grown to the level of a full-fledged art educational institution, which the Art Class became in the last quarter of the 19th–20th centuries.
