Slovenski alpinizem je od srede sedemdesetih let 20. stoletja v samem svetovnem vrhu. Pot tja se je začela leta 1975 z izjemnim uspehom v južni steni osemtisočaka Makaluja in uspehom na zahodnem grebenu Everesta štiri leta pozneje. Za pristop na vseh 14 osemtisočakov so Slovenci potrebovali 20 let – prvi je bil leta 1975 Makalu, zadnja pa leta 1995 Anapurna. Pobude o odhodu v Himalajo so se na Slovenskem pojavile že kmalu po drugi svetovni vojni, do prve odprave pa je prišlo leta 1960. V prispevku je predstavljena kronologija himalajskih odprav od začetkov obiskovanja najvišjih gora sveta in pregled prvih slovenskih pristopov na osemtisočake vse do zadnjega vzpona na Anapurno leta 1995. Dodan je seznam vseh udeležencev najpomembnejših odprav in seznam vseh Slovencev na osemtisočakih od leta 1975 do danes.
