Abstract
Food culture on the Tanzanian Swahili coast by the tenth century ce reflects the geography (land and sea) and social histories of coastal Eastern Africa, a long narrow strip connecting communities between what is now southern Somalia with northern Mozambique and offshore islands. The coastal culture was influenced by coastal–interior trade connections, with agro‐pastoralists moving from the interior by 2000 years ago, in addition to intercontinental Indian Ocean trade interactions that started from the first millennium ce . The introduction of the Islamic religion to coastal East Africa by the eighth century influenced the area's food culture as well, and included the adoption of rice into a cuisine centered on African domesticated grains, sorghum, and pearl millet.
