Abstract
The lifetime prevalence of obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD) in the general population, although traditionally thought to be 0.05%, has recently been reported to be as high as 1.3% to 2% in the United States and 3% in Edmonton, Canada. The lifetime prevalence of OCD in the general population, although traditionally thought to be 0.05%, has recently been reported to be as high as 1.3% to 2% in the United States and 3% in Edmonton, Canada. One way to examine whether patients with OCD have a psychobiological abnormality involving serotonergic function is to compare drug-free OCD patients with matched controls on several indices of serotonergic function. The lack of a differentially increased secretion of “stress hormones” such as prolactin and cortisol, in the presence of apparently very stressful experience in patients with OCD, is a puzzling phenomenon. Therapeutic responses linked to serotonergic changes do not, however, necessarily implicate a primary serotonergic abnormality in patients with OCD.
