Abstract
This chapter introduces Dr. D. Scharie Tavcer’s research project evaluating current policies addressing sexual violence (SV) and existing sexual consent education programming offered at post-secondary institutions (PSIs) across Canada. The project utilised quantitative and qualitative methods implemented in three phases. Phase 1 included a literature review on previous research and scholarship about SV, consent, consent education, online education, and mandatory education. Phase 1 also involved scanning, collating, and analysing data from 130 PSIs across Canada. Phase 2 consisted of conducting over 160 interviews and surveys collected from students, staff, and service providers at various PSIs and communities. Initially, interviews were to be conducted face to face but were halted due to the COVID-19 pandemic and replaced with electronic recruitment and data collection method. For the final phase, all the data collected was collated into a 60-minute online sexual consent education module that provides the basis for this book. In addition to consent education, the module accentuates systemic cultural issues that sustain SV and redirects discussions toward how we can shift the culture at PSIs to prevent violence and enrich a #cultureofconsent.
