Abstract
Post-secondary students and people aged 18-25 are at an increased risk of being targets of sexual violence (SV) and perpetrators. And despite decades of violence prevention, education campaigns, and intervention programming, the prevalence rates have remained static for over 30 years. This chapter deconstructs the term sexual violence and unpacks the discourse on what exploits and sustains its prevalence. It presents a statistical analysis of the realities of SV in Canada, including self-reported and police-reported rates of SV, gender dimensions, the impact on specific populations that are targeted, and the underlying systemic structures and systems that produce and reproduce violence. The chapter enables the reader to build on their knowledge of SV by providing an overview of the intersectional elements (e.g., rape culture, colonialism, patriarchy, and the criminal justice system) that contribute to its prevalence, including a review of literature and research.
