Abstract
On a Logician’s Mantelpiece: Cantor Tony Simpson Click for larger view View full resolution Bertrand Russell populated his mantelpiece (or the wall above his desk) with portraits of thinkers he admired. The signed photograph in its 11.5 × 11.5 cm. frame is captioned “Herzlichen Gruss” [Cordial greetings] “von Georg Cantor Naunhof, 13 April 1905”. The occasion cannot be traced, for Cantor and Russell are not known to have been in correspondence before 1911. The former’s extraordinary letters of 1911 are in Volume 1 of Russell’s Autobiography.
