Jacques Galinier es doctor en Antropología por la Escuela de Altos Estudios en Ciencias Sociales, Paris (1985). Se desempeña como Director de Investigaciones de Primera Clase Emérito en el Centro Nacional de la Investigación Científica de Francia (CNRS) y como miembro de tiempo completo del Laboratorio de Etnología y de Sociología de la Universidad de París Nanterre. Es co-responsable del programa de investigación transdisciplinario “Antropología de la noche” (CNRS- Universidad de París Nanterre). Ha impartido clases en el Departamento de Etnología de la Universidad de Burdeos (1973-1975 y 1980-1981), en el Departamento de Etnología de la Universidad de París X (1978-2004), en el Instituto de Investigaciones Antropológicas de la Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (1987, 1995, 2003, 2016), en el Programa de Estudios de Posgrado de la Universidad Federal de Rio de Janeiro (1987), en el Departamento de Antropología de la Universidad Eötvös Lorand de Budapest (1992), en el Departamento de Ciencias Sociales de la Universidad de Natal, Brasil (1998, 2003, 2015) y en la Universidad Complutense de Madrid (2003, 2004, 2005). Asimismo forma parte del consejo editorial de las revistas L’Homme (Paris), Journal de la Société des Américanistes (Paris), Journal of the Southwest (Tucson, Universidad de Arizona), Recherches Amérindiennes au Québec (Montreal), Dimensión Antropológica (México DF), y de Anales de Antropología (México DF). Ha realizado estudios etnogáficos pioneros sobre las poblaciones otomí, en México Oriental.
