Abstract
John Locke's Two Treatises of Government, with its suggestions that Indigenous peoples have failed to invest labor into their lands and to develop government by law, has long been recognized as justifying the dispossession of the nations of Turtle Island. Locke was, however, an avid reader of travel books, and his notes on Franciscan friar Gabriel Sagard's Histoire du Canada (1636), which describes life among the Wendat, show that Locke was open to learning from Indigenous cultures, and even imagined writing a utopia based on Wendat social and political life.
