O presente artigo visa discutir a questão do fracasso escolar e consequentemente a exclusão dos alunos no interior das escolas, a partir do entendimento de que o neoliberalismo é o principal responsável pelas desigualdades existentes no ensino. Sendo assim, o objetivo central é analisar os mecanismos presentes nas políticas educacionais atuais que contribuem para que o fracasso escolar continue presente e se reproduza nas escolas públicas brasileiras. Para isso, buscamos estabelecer uma relação entre os desdobramentos das políticas educacionais atuais centradas nas avaliações de larga escala, os mecanismos de meritocracia e as desigualdades educacionais com o fracasso escolar. Como metodologia fizemos uso da revisão bibliográfica (LIMA; MIOTO, 2007), e para essas discussões trazemos para o debate Patto (1999, 2007), Dardot ; Laval (2016), Faria ; Miranda (2014), Resende; Miranda (2016), Freitas (2007, 2016, 2018), Saviani (2017), Oliveira (2015). O texto foi organizado em quatro seções a) apresentação das preocupações de Patto (1999) em relação ao fracasso escolar; b) análise das políticas educacionais centradas nas avaliações e gerenciamento empresarial; c) estabelecimento da relação das políticas educacionais atuais com o fracasso escolar e desigualdades sociais; d) apontamentos finais problematizando as políticas de avaliação, meritocracia, desigualdades sociais e fracasso escolar bem como, a busca de uma educação de qualidade e emancipatória para todos. Com isso, pretendemos contribuir para as discussões existentes sobre as causas do fracasso escolar na atualidade. Palavras-chave Fracasso escolar. Neoliberalismo. Políticas educacionais.
