Le Recueil des choses diverses nous apprend que Pascal fut un lecteur du Roman comique de Scarron. L’anecdote est moins insolite qu’il n’y paraît : les rapprochements entre les deux œuvres sont possibles et nombreux, comme cet article entend le montrer. Mais si l’homme est de part et d’autre contradictoire et discordant, rêvant d’une aventure épique désormais rayée par sa misère, le propre de Pascal est d’intégrer ces bribes de burlesque, autant qu’on puisse en juger, dans un itinéraire qui invite à voir le ridicule là où il est et à déceler l’admirable là où on ne l’attend pas. Dès lors, l’écrivain des Pensées emporte Scarron au sein même de l’ordre de la charité.
