Abstract
This appendix provides more information on the survey items that are used to operationalize respondents’ evaluations of the state of the economy and their evaluations of party leaders. For economic evaluations, the measures are mostly sociotropic retrospective evaluations of the economy—though when such measures were not available, evaluations of the current state of the economy or measures that capture how respondents evaluate the government’s impact on the economy were used. The reference period in the questions vary somewhat, but most items have a twelve-month reference frame. For leader evaluations, the measures are mostly like/dislike scales or thermometer ratings of specific party leaders. When respondents were asked to rate different politicians from the same party, the most prominent leader in the election campaign was selected.
