Abstract
This chapter offers a contemplation of the fate of Canada and North America, by thinking about it alongside the Canadian who contemplated it most widely, deeply, and publicly. Technology in Grant&s;s estimation is nothing so much as the fateful totality of the techniques that were summoned forth in the wake of this primal encounter in order to, ironically, master human and non-human nature for the sake of freedom. The symbol of eternity as he derived it from Aristotle, by contrast, is quite different, in so far as the temporal and the eternal are held. That which may be understood to be divine or eternal by Aristotelian metaphysics is symbolized by the word “cosmos” which exists in opposition with the symbol “chaos”. The universal and homogeneous state is thus understood to be but a state of waiting—a holding pattern in anticipation of either the arrival of the superman who will create new horizons for man or the theater.
