Abstract
Witnessing the aftermath of decades of adventuresome efforts at constitutional reform in Canada during the late twentieth century, she was astonished to find these bountiful resources the subject of neglect precisely when they most deserved consultation. A sustained challenge to oligarchical arrangements of all stripes ties together Ajzenstat&s;s contributions as a scholar and commentator. In the actual speeches and writings of the people involved in crafting, debating, and ratifying the terms of Confederation, whether English or French, liberal or conservative, Ajzenstat finds overwhelming emphasis and agreement in using the language of individual rights and freedoms, seeking to devise a mixed institutional framework to advance and protect them. The political philosophical perspective out of which the British parliamentary system emerged recognizes that human beings are flawed, ambitious, proud, and self-interested.
