Tem sido reiterada a ausência da utilização dos cadernos de encargos em estudos arquitetónicos e de intervenção patrimonial. No entanto, trata-se de um documento fundamental para o entendimento da forma como se desenvolve a passagem do papel para a matéria, acrescentando dados sobre opções técnicas por parte dos arquitetos e proprietários, e elementos para as histórias, e os glossários de materiais e técnicas construtivas.Com este artigo pretende-se valorizar a leitura e interpretação destas peças e, assim, abrir um novo campo de trabalho na interpretação da obra arquitetónica de arquitetos e mestres de obras de princípios de Novecentos. Para o efeito, toma-se o exemplo dos contratos de empreitada e respetivos cadernos de encargos de cinco obras de uma fase inicial da carreira de Raul Lino. Deles é possível extrair preocupações construtivas, domínio da técnica, escolha, aplicação e integração dos materiais, controlo da qualidade construtiva e decorativa bem como o modo de atuar perante as especificidades de implantação, localização e proprietário de cada casa.
