Abstract
The author examines Danticat’s migration short story cycle The Dew Breaker (2004), using the vernacular framework of lòt bò dlo, a Kreyol phrase meaning “on the other side of the water,” which can refer to the ancestors’ location in Ginen, or Africa, where Haitian tradition dating from the time of colonial slavery says they return, and to Haitian migrants’ location in the US and Canada. Lòt bò dlo locates both the dead and the exiled in relation to Haiti’s island environment, Vodou traditions, and (de)colonial history. This concept helps map The Dew Breaker’s seemingly disorienting landscape and fragmented narrative structure to reveal how Danticat mediates across time (connecting the ancestors and the living) and space (connecting rooted and routed Haitians), through an aesthetics informed by the material landscape and the Haitian vernacular to create an epistemic perspective on migration.
