Abstract
Cet article examine l’émergence de la théorie stadiale de l’histoire dans les années 1750 en France et en Écosse à la lumière du concept de temporalisation de la différence forgé par Johannes Fabian. L’article explore les rapports entre la théorie stadiale et certains aspects du contexte global du colonialisme européen, et avance que cette théorie repose en grande partie sur une opération épistémique d’altérisation par la temporalité historique, rompant ainsi par rapport aux modes d’altérisation par la spatialité géographique qui prévalaient jusqu’alors. L’article examine ces deux modes d’altérisation par une analyse comparée de certains textes de la période des Lumières françaises et écossaises, notamment Montesquieu, Smith, Turgot, et Rousseau.
