Abstract
This chapter explores the rise of the transport and communication revolution with the maturation of the second British Empire. Innovation vastly changed the geopolitical and commercial landscape as the modern era of globalization emerged. The chapter explains the centrality of rail and steam transport by sea and land of global trade in Scotland. It also covers the growth of the domestic heavy industry in vast proportions. By 1912, the Scottish capital had a controlling interest in one of the world's biggest shipping lines. The chapter notes the influence of Scottish culture in South and East Asia, the United States, and Canada. Additionally, the Kirk of Scotland played a significant role in creating an infrastructure for Scottish identity through the British Empire.
