Abstract
Music is a feature of societies and cultures worldwide. The study of the relationship between music and media has developed into an important subfield of the sociology of music, reflecting the significance of mediation on music. This entry outlines modern developments and changes in the production and consumption of music that are attributed to evolving media formats – from radio and television to physical recorded media products such as vinyl records to mobile app‐based platforms like on‐demand music streaming services.
