Publié en 1941, en un temps où la crise climatique était non identifiée et la réflexion écologique quasi inexistante, le recueil de contes Bêtes de la Brousse propose une écriture originale de l’animalité et nous invite à penser la nature en termes de coexistence et d’interdépendance, à interroger l’alliance de l’humain avec le vivant. Tout en s’inscrivant dans la tradition de la fable animalière, cette suite de quatre contes est traversée par l’éthique du bon usage de la nature, dans la lignée de l’écrivain, naturaliste et philosophe Henry David Thoreau au xixe siècle, et de la grande figure de l’écologie américaine, Aldo Leopold, mort en 1948.
