Abstract
Abstract The restoration of unity among Christians is ‘a principal concern’ of Vatican II, closely linked to the council’s reforming purpose, as it relates to the very nature and mission of Christ’s Church. This chapter explores how an overarching ecumenical concern shapes the conciliar event and contributes to an ecclesiology of communion. The council marks a turn towards the humble awareness of the need for Catholic renewal and a more generous recognition of other Christian communions. Building on the recognition of the real, if imperfect, communion that unites the Catholic Church with other Christian communions, the Decree on Ecumenism, Unitatis Redintegratio, establishes the principles that guide the practice of dialogue, common prayer, and common witness.
