Near-Field Powering Sourceless Receiving System for Two-Dimensional DoA Estimation

Abstract
Power efficiency is becoming a remarkable metric in specifying and evaluating the performance of 5G and future communication systems and devices. In this paper, a unique topology of sourceless receiver together with near-field powering is proposed and studied for two-dimensional direction-of-arrival (2D DoA) estimation. This receiver is fully designed with passive circuits and powered by radiation from a near-field antenna array that serves as its external LO and power supply simultaneously for multiple channels. Both component- and system-level developments are carried out and discussed, and the receiver performance for 2D DoA estimation is demonstrated at 28 GHz.
