L’après-confinement du printemps 2020 en Europe occidentale a été un moment d’espoir et d’hésitation quant à la possibilité d’un retour à la normale après le premier acte de la Covid-19. Cet article en rend compte à partir du cas précis du retour à la plage dans quatre grandes villes méditerranéennes (deux en Espagne et deux en France), où une enquête auprès des usagers et des observations de terrain ont été menées pour relever les effets de la pandémie sur les pratiques et la gestion. Entre appréhension du risque et désir de sociabilité, présence des autorités publiques et relatif effacement, l’étude révèle une nette distinction entre la situation espagnole et la situation française, en lien direct avec l’inégale violence du choc occasionné par la première vague de la pandémie dans ces deux pays.
