Le visioni letterarie di Alfonso Varano e Giacomo Leopardi: tra teologia e ghost story?

Abstract
L’articolo intende analizzare il ruolo della notte come momento privilegiato per il manifestarsi di visioni di defunti ed entità soprannaturali nelle Visioni sacre e morali di Alfonso Varano, pubblicate postume nel 1789, e nell’“Appressamento della morte,” composto nel 1816, di Giacomo Leopardi. Nonostante l’impianto moralistico di tali opere e il loro debito alla tradizione medievale e soprattutto dantesca, i poemetti presi in esame dimostrano che il fenomeno delle visioni è fortemente caratterizzato da elementi, quali terrore e meraviglia, che compaiono anche nei romanzi gotici che nello stesso periodo si stavano diffondendo nel resto d’Europa e particolarmente nel contesto anglosassone. La notte, pertanto, confermandosi lo spazio temporale più propizio per l’apparizione degli spiriti, contribuisce alla creazione di un immaginario “fantasmagorico” italiano moderno, suggerendo un’interpretazione delle due opere scelte in termini di una ghost story italiana ante litteram.
