Questo contributo analizza i temi della notte e dell’indefinito nell’opera di Giacomo Leopardi, muovendo dalla concezione preromantica del notturno, dalla Philosophical Enquiry di Burke e dalla meditazione zibaldoniana intorno al primato gnoseologico della facoltà immaginativa. Attraverso il confronto con il pensiero di Novalis sul motivo della lontananza e con la psicologia sartriana de L’imaginaire (1940), s’intende mostrare come la notte, nell’opera leopardiana, rappresenti la dimensione estetica privilegiata per la manifestazione dell’immaginario, in una prospettiva che, non solo delinea un’estetica del lontano e dell’indefinito, ma apre anche alla specificità fondativa, nei confronti della coscienza, dell’atto immaginativo, operando lo stesso ribaltamento nella gerarchia delle facoltà che Sartre porrà in essere oltre un secolo più tardi.
