Abstract
The present work approaches the figure of the character Circe in Homer's Odyssey, whose dating (approximately 8th century BC), as well as the authorship, refer us to a "Homeric question", discussed here, taking into account concepts such as gender, magic and mythology. From the category metis, cunning intelligence, the role of the character in the Homeric narrative and its relevance to the context of Ancient Greece is discussed, especially when it comes to gender issues that were consolidated. In this way, the negative image, later attributed to Circe, starts to be problematized within the Hellenic context, revealing that her pharmakon, later associated with magic, did not have a negative character in itself, used even by other characters, being her role as a woman with a metis that gives her a pejorative meaning, after all, it allowed her to invert the order of the established social hierarchy.
