U chorych na schizofrenię częściej niż w populacji ogólnej występuje zespół metaboliczny, który jest przyczyną zwiększonej chorobowości i śmiertelności.W pracy dokonano przeglądu literatury poświęconej czynnikom związanym z jego występowaniem.Wiele uwagi poświęcono zależnościom między nasileniem objawów negatywnych schizofrenii, aktywnością chorego oraz obecnością składowych zespołu metabolicznego.W artykule przedstawiono doniesienia naukowe dotyczące badanych dotychczas zależności pomiędzy niektórymi zmiennymi klinicznymi a występowaniem zespołu metabolicznego oraz jego poszczególnymi kryteriami (wg National Cholesterol Education Program Adult Treatment Panel III).Omówiono zależności między stosowaniem leków przeciwpsychotycznych a występowaniem zaburzeń metabolicznych, a także rozwój zespołu metabolicznego u chorych na schizofrenię nieleczonych farmakologicznie.Dostępne badania na temat wspomnianych uwarunkowań miały charakter przekrojowy i wykorzystywały subiektywne metody oceny aktywności fizycznej, jako narzędziami posługiwano się głównie skalami i kwestionariuszami, co utrudnia jednoznaczną interpretację wyników.Wnioski z przeprowadzonych badań bywają niekiedy ze sobą sprzeczne i nie pozwalają na opracowanie spójnych zaleceń dotyczących klinicznego postępowania u chorych na schizofrenię z objawami zespołu metabolicznego.Dla pełnego zrozumienia obserwowanych powiązań konieczne są wieloośrodkowe badania z wykorzystaniem obiektywnych metod oceny aktywności fizycznej, takich jak akcelerometria.Może się to przyczynić do zmniejszenia śmiertelności w grupie osób ze schizofrenią poprzez określenie zasad właściwej profilaktyki i monitorowania zespołu metabolicznego oraz ograniczenie jego konsekwencji dzięki wcześniejszemu podjęciu leczenia.
