Preliminary Screening of Biosurfactants Produced by a Pseudomonas sp. Isolated from Mud Drill Cuttings

Abstract
Biosurfactants are a group of surface-active molecules synthesized by microorganisms.They either adhere to cell surfaces or are excreted extracellularly into the growth medium.A bacterial isolate identified as Pseudomonas sp. was cultured in a synthetic medium adjusted to varying acidic to alkaline conditions with varying concentrations of sodium chloride.Screening tests were carried out on the bacterial isolate to verify its ability to produce biosurfactants.The effect of the media on the emulsification index and surface tension of the free product showed that although the isolate was found to be osmotolerant, withstanding and growing in media containing high sodium chloride concentration, biosurfactant was produced optimally at pH 7.2 and sodium chloride (NaCl) concentration of 3%.The cell-free media recorded optimum emulsification index of 66.5% and reduced the surface tension of the culture media from 59.7 mN/m 2 to 28.1 mN/m 2 .
