El ensayo pretende demostrar cómo, en las diversas etapas de su carrera, Emilia Pardo Bazán aprovechó el periodismo (y, en ciertos momentos, las conferencias públicas) para proyectar una imagen pública no solo de novelista sino también de intelectual. Propone que, si, por un lado, su exclusión de la vida política por ser mujer ha sido un obstáculo para su reconocimiento como una intelectual, por otro lado, paradójicamente, dicha exclusión la ayudó a ser una intelectual en el sentido moderno del pensador independiente no afiliado al Estado ni a un partido político. Se subraya la importancia de reconocerla como una de los llamados «intelectuales de 1898».
