The problem of coastal erosion, exacerbated by anthropogenic stressors such as riverbank deforestation, is a largely natural phenomenon with the potential of causing, in the medium-to-long term, significant damage to many coastal communities.In the context of the ever-increasing vulnerability of coastal structures due to climate change and the resulting increased frequency of extreme weather events, this article examines the response of four Quebec municipalities and of the Government of Quebec to manage the risks associated with coastal erosion after the tidal flooding of 2010 known in French as "Les Grandes marées de 2010".Based on a diachronic examination of the strategies adopted to reduce the risk of erosion, to mitigate damage and to provide compensation, the authors identify some of the paradigm changes that emerged following that event as well as the changes necessary to develop an adequate response for managing the human, material and environmental risks arising from coastal erosion in the context of climate change.
