Dentro del amplio corpus de las contribuciones de Emilia Pardo Bazán a La Ilustración Artística, seleccionamos las dedicadas en parte o totalmente a dar cuenta de casos criminales. Después de repasar brevemente el horizonte ideológico sobre crimen y castigo expuesto en La piedra angular y continuado en las crónicas, nos interesamos por distintos motivos literarios (el recurso a la literatura para figurar la decadencia del criminal y el rechazo de su presentación estereotipada) para plantearnos el porqué de su fascinación por el crimen violento.
