Abstract
Hydrogen is not a source of energy but rather an energy storage medium. In most cases it is used to store electrical energy which can then be used as a source of mechanical energy to power a vehicle by means of an internal combustion engine or a fuel cell. This chapter considers the technologies that have used hydrogen as a transportation fuel for road vehicles. The history of hydrogen powered vehicles along with the presently available vehicles utilizing this technology are presented. Finally, the use of hydrogen to produce other fuels, notably ammonia, methanol and dimethyl ether is discussed.
