Cet article analyse la mission photographique entreprise par Victor Bérard avec le photographe Fred Boissonnas en Méditerranée sur les traces de l’Odyssée en 1912, en la mettant en perspective avec l’histoire des images. À l’aide des photographies originales, de la correspondance des deux protagonistes et d’ouvrages plus tardifs de Bérard, il montre combien ce voyage était une vaste enquête sur la figurabilité d’une œuvre de fiction nourrie, certes, par la philologie, l’histoire, la géographie, mais aussi par l’histoire de l’art. Alors que l’œuvre d’Homère commençait à être adaptée au cinéma, cette enquête reposait sur des intuitions fortes : celle que pour transmettre l’histoire auprès du grand public, il fallait désormais compter avec le spectacle d’images sous différentes formes ; que celles‑ci avaient par ailleurs la capacité de créer des connexions intimes et disruptives avec le passé ; qu’Homère était une ressource de sacré et de narration utile à une IIIe République laïque, dont les ambitions coloniales liaient désormais la France métropolitaine à des millions de personnes et de vastes territoires sur les pourtours de la Méditerranée.
