Abstract
Désormais exhumés des archives par la publication récente de Georges Aubin, les Mémoires d’Amédée Papineau, fils aîné du grand Louis-Joseph, proposent un étonnant diptyque : une première partie d’une introspection pleine de charmes, exprimée dans une prose excellente et respectant les codes du genre mémorialiste ; une seconde, impersonnelle, largement historiographique, où la prose laisse place à une retranscription de documents officiels et à des entrées diaristiques en lien avec les rébellions de 1837-1838. De ce projet mémorial se dégagent trois postures que cet article met en lumière : celle du mémorialiste, qui permet d’inscrire le texte dans un genre en formation ; celle du collectionneur, marquée au coin d’un sens de l’observation aiguisé et d’une forte conscience historique se traduisant par l’importance de la conservation ; celle de l’historien, poussant Papineau à répondre aux silences de l’Histoire. Ces trois postures analysées, l’objet de l’oeuvre, sa destinée et son caractère curieux deviennent intelligibles et éclairent ainsi l’entreprise narrative de Papineau au soir de sa vie.
