Abstract
Abstract This entry provides an overview of the life and major scholarly contributions of Marshall McLuhan, the Canadian professor of English literature whose analysis of media technologies and their effects on psychic and social life pioneered the field of media studies and anticipated many features of the information society. After sketching out McLuhan's biography, the entry traces the evolution of McLuhan's sociology of media from his dissertation to his landmark Understanding Media , devoting special attention to his methodological approach to media history and analysis and his principal theoretical insights into the shaping effects of media technologies on social processes and structures. Along the way, the entry clarifies the meaning of many of McLuhan's most difficult ideas and aphorisms (including “the medium is the message” and “the medium is the massage”) and shows how his work remains a vital resource for students and scholars seeking to understand the current global media ecosystem.
