Abstract
Cet article ethnocritique étudie un détail temporel du roman Germinie Lacerteux des frères Goncourt : la fête de naissance. Outre qu’il est signifiant dans une formation culturelle historiquement située, le détail de l’anniversaire ordonnance la chronologie du récit : il n’est dès lors pas « structuralement superflu », pour paraphraser Barthes dans son célèbre article sur « l’effet de réel ». Les trois étapes de l’analyse ethnocritique servent de fil conducteur à la lecture : reconnaissance ethnographique du détail producteur d’un « effet de culture », resémantisation ethnologique et enfin réinscription du détail dans les logiques culturelles de l’œuvre (plus spécifiquement les logiques culturelles de la réciprocité, de la mésalliance, du malheur et de la datation seront examinées).
