Abstract
En écrivant Cleveland, son célèbre roman-mémoires, l’abbé Prévost accorde une grande importance aux sons. Il insiste d’abord sur les bruits dans le déroulement de l’action, et surtout il caractérise les voix des personnages (les cris, les émotions, la séduction). Au-delà de cette précision physiologique, le romancier utilise la musique dans plusieurs épisodes et lui donne un rôle dans la recherche du bonheur. Le roman peut même être comparé à un opéra par sa construction, ses décors et ses situations. Les sons contribuent ainsi à l’expression morale et dramatique des sentiments.
