L’émergence de nouvelles formes de cafés (café-chat, café-friperie, etc.) soulève la question du rôle de ce type de commerces dans le quotidien des travailleurs, des habitants et, plus largement, au sein du territoire où ils s’insèrent. Souvent présenté comme l’archétype du tiers-lieu, les évolutions récentes du café interrogent la pertinence de cette désignation, alors même que sa relation au territoire et à l’identité de celui-ci sont souvent négligées. À partir de l’analyse de cas montréalais, cet article réfléchit au rôle des cafés comme éventuels tiers-lieux permettant l’affirmation des traits du quartier où ils s’insèrent, l’amélioration des milieux et de la qualité de vie des travailleurs et habitants qui les fréquentent ou les voisinent. Si le succès de ces commerces semble reposer davantage sur un concept qui les distinguerait de leur seule localisation, il n’en demeure pas moins qu’ils ne sont pas tous des tiers-lieux aux mêmes degrés, leurs impacts sur les travailleurs et habitants variant selon la nature et la portée de leur ancrage territorial. Une meilleure compréhension du spectre de cet ancrage territorial permet d’enrichir et de nuancer la définition usuelle de tiers-lieu.
