À partir des années 1950, le régime agricole productiviste s’installe de façon hégémonique et va transformer en profondeur la ruralité québécoise avec des phénomènes de concentration, d’intensification et de spécialisation. Cette modernisation des pratiques agricoles s’inscrit dorénavant au coeur de l’agrobusiness mondialisée. À cause de la sensibilité croissante de la population face aux questions environnementales et aux exigences d’une alimentation saine, l’agriculture industrielle est généralement perçue négativement par les consommateurs. L’industrie agroalimentaire maintient alors une représentation bucolique de la campagne en recourant à l’idylle rurale, ancrée dans le pittoresque et mettant en avant une image surannée et idéalisée de la ruralité. Parce qu’elle évite ces stéréotypes, une pratique artistique relevant du documentaire critique proposerait une meilleure compréhension du territoire et des enjeux liés à la ruralité québécoise contemporaine et à nos réalités agroalimentaires.
