Since metasurface antennas are composed of ensembles of electrically-small resonators, they have a tendency to be frequency band-limited. While this may be a significant challenge in wireless communications, for biomedical applications, such inherent limitation may be an advantage. In this work, we present an application of a metasurface antenna where the antenna is used to capture an impression-image of a human female breast, thereby acting as an electronic film. The impression basically captures the electromagnetic near field arising from the re-radiation of the breast. We Show that such use of metasurfaces antennas, when used as receivers, can provide a potentially powerful diagnostic tool for breast cancer detection.
