Abstract
The link between identity and language is quite different in Scotland from in Wales. The economic irruption of oil in the centre of mainland Gaelic-speaking Kishorn is only hastening the progress of the decline, and even the National Mod manifestly fails to keep Gaelic as the only language of the field. In Eire, there are virtually no Erse-speakers left and the ‘Gaeltacht’ is confined to the north and west, rural, depopulated areas, whilst in Canada, there is a very flourishing French-only speaking community which includes a sizeable urban base. The Catholic islanders identify themselves, and are identified, in precisely the same way as their Protestant neighbours. The advantages of the Gregynog conference is that two diverse research traditions – broadly ethnographic and structural – were represented and each presented a fairly coherent account, within their own perspective. The social necessity of maintaining such identifications is conditioned by a combination of underlying factors which must be studied empirically for each case.
