Abstract
INTRODUÇÃO: A meningite é um processo inflamatório das meninges que envolvem as duas membranas cerebrais (pia-máter e aracnoide) e o líquido cefalorraquidiano (LCR), podendo ser causado por diversos fatores, infecciosos ou não. Uma grande variedade de agentes infecciosos é implicada como causadora de meningite. Pela ordem de frequência, são: bactérias, vírus, fungos, espiroquetas, helmintos e protozoários. MATERIAIS E MÉTODOS:A metodologia aplicada para fundamentação desta pesquisa, será de natureza exploratória, do tipo pesquisa bibliográfica analisando artigos publicados em periódicos indexados que tratam sobre o assunto, em bases de dados específicas, que abordam a temática da saúde de forma global e que objetivou analisar publicações sobre a importância da abordagem correta da meningite DESENVOLVIMENTO: A Meningite é um processo inflamatório das membranas leptomeníngeas que envolvem o encéfalo e a medula espinhal, em resposta a um agente agressor, na maioria das vezes infeccioso. Houve redução significativa da incidência de meningite nos últimos anos, com reflexo na mortalidade, graças as campanhas de vacinação (vacina contra hemófilos principalmente) e uso de antibióticos imediatamente à suspeita de meningite. Os sintomas de meningite podem ser progressivos, geralmente precedidos por quadro febril, ou fulminantes, causando choque séptico e óbito em poucas horas. A apresentação clínica é variável conforme a faixa etária do paciente.CONCLUSÃO: A meningite em pacientes pediátricos exige altos índices de suspeição e preparo da equipe para agir precocemente, da forma mais adequada, evitando ao máximo os desfechos negativos.
