Abstract
Cet article examine 203 inventaires après décès dressés dans le district judiciaire de Trois-Rivières dans les années 1800-1820 et 1880-1900. Malgré ses biais inhérents, cette source rend possible une incursion dans la vie quotidienne des populations. Le développement du capitalisme, la commercialisation de l’agriculture et l’urbanisation ont remodelé l’environnement matériel des habitants de cette région, leurs façons de consommer et les modalités de transmission de leurs biens. Nos données montrent aussi que les campagnes de la Mauricie affichent une différenciation sociale de plus en plus marquée au 19e siècle, et ce, sur de nombreux plans : agrément des intérieurs, taille des cheptels, position dans les réseaux de crédit, etc. L’étude des sociétés rurales doit ainsi tenir compte, en plus de l’exclusion des héritages et des départs vers les villes manufacturières, de la profonde marginalisation de lignées familiales qui font toujours partie, tant bien que mal, du monde rural à la fin du 19e siècle.
