Abstract
The Cosmos at Home is an iconographic analysis of the Villa Grimani Molin's early modern fresco program.Located next to Andrea Palladio's (1508-80) Villa Badoer in Veneto's Fratta Polesine, the Villa Grimani Molin has been an elusive study object for art and architectural historians.The villa's and the frescoes' patronage, authorship, and dating have been uncertain.In The Cosmos at Home, Meital Shai tackles the historical lacunae surrounding the lavish residence.Building upon the work of historians such as Aby Warburg, Carlo Ginzburg, Giovanni Levi, and Manfredo Tafuri, Shai endeavours to apply microhistory to the study of Villa Grimani Molin's decorative features.In the author's words: "I have thus sought to approach the study […] as a proper historian's attempt to face up to a subject whose analysis has been exhausted by the usual channels of the art historian" (33).Using methodological rectification, Shai investigates a plurality of archival documents related to the villa's history, including cadasters, hydraulic building licences, and dowry documents, to create a broader historical context-a type of metastructure-for the frescoes' iconographic analysis.The author concludes by suggesting a new dating for the villa, support for Franco Barbieri's hypothesis that the project was finished by the Veneto architect Vincenzo Scamozzi (1548-1616), and a reattribution of the fresco cycle to the Ferrarese painter Cesare Filippi (1536-c.1602) on the grounds of formal and stylistic analyses.The volume is divided into an introduction and six chapters.The text also comprises a preface by historian Luciano Allegra and an effective documentary appendix.Chapter 1, "A Documentary Analysis, " clarifies past attempts at dating and attribution.Through comparative studies of a selection of Venetian patristic rural residences and early modern maps of Fratta Polesine, such as the Pontoni-Trevisi map from the Venice State Archives, Shai proposes a new construction chronology for the villa spanning from 1581 to 1601.In addition, the author reconstructs the Grimani's familial relations through contracts, wills, and dowry arrangements, focusing on the activities of the villa's first owner Vincenzo Grimani (1525-82).Based on the new dating and Grimani
