Abstract
Hemilaminectomy and mini-hemilaminectomy are considered the standard of care for removal of extruded disk material in the thoracolumbar region. Additional indications for mini-hemilaminectomy and hemilaminectomy include decompression of inflammatory lesions, decompression following spinal trauma, removal of laterally or ventrally located tumors to address appropriately located subarachnoid diverticula, and for removal of foreign material. A mini-hemilaminectomy can easily be converted into a hemilaminectomy or be extended over several adjacent vertebrae if required. An advantage of the mini-hemilaminectomy over the hemilaminectomy is that it can be performed bilaterally without compromise to the bony support or soft tissues. Hemorrhage is typically minor and in most instances is easily controlled; but in cases where severe hemorrhage is encountered, it can hinder visualization and prevent adequate spinal decompression or lead to marked blood loss.
